Lavender Abbey, Provence

Lavender Abbey, Provence

This abbey in southern France’s Provence region took on the purplish hue of the lavender flowers not because of any computer trick. Rather, it was the unforseen yet fortuitous result of a low cloud cover that served as a big reflector, bouncing the color back into the
building.

The monks at this 12th century Romanesque structure grow lavender today as they have for hundreds of years, selling the flowers to the vibrant perfume industry for their main source of income.

I like the juxtaposition in this photograph of the weight of history sharing the frame with the lightness of healing flowers, and how the arch in the windows mirrors the arch of the lavender rows.
